The local government unit of Magalang under the leadership of Mayor Malu has partnered with the University of Santo Tomas (UST) to draft plans for the preservation of the Heritage Core District and Old Municipal Building. An important Memorandum of Agreement was signed on February 21, 2024 by Magalang Mayor Malu Paras Lacson and representatives from UST, formalizing this collaboration between the municipality and the university. The plans aim to serve as a roadmap for balancing progress and preserving Magalang’s historic and cultural legacy.

The agreement involves UST assisting with drafting plans for Magalang’s Heritage Core District and Old Municipal Building. In her remarks at the ceremony, Mayor Malu Paras Lacson stated: “These plans will serve as our roadmap, guiding us with educated caution as we navigate the balance between progress and preservation.”

She emphasized that “this partnership is not just a document. It is about a shared vision, a shared responsibility to honor the legacy of those who came before us and to ensure that future generations can also marvel at the beauty of Magalang.”

Joining Mayor Malu in signing were Councilor Norman Lacson and Tourism Officer EnP Ryan M. Miranda from Magalang, along with UST Dean Ventura of College of Architecture, Dean Turingan of Faculty of Arts and Letters, Dean Vasco of Graduate School, and Associate professor Eric Zerrudo of the Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics. Also present were numerous Magalang department heads, representing an important collaboration between the municipality and university.
